A Tale Told by Three Gravestones
The summer of 2024, my husband and I drove down to Pleasant City, Ohio. It was the first time I had been down there since I was a kid. We drove to through the center of town. There had been businesses at one time but that summer there was no restaurant or even a place to buy a Coke. We found the church and then on our way out of town, we found the cemetery. It took some searching but with John's help, I found the gravestones I was looking for. My grandfather (Stephen Troyan) and his parents, Helen and George Troyan (my great-grandparents). The three headstones gave me lots of information:
- My grandfather was born August 6, 1899. He and my mother, Alice, nearly shared a birthday. My mother was born on August 5, 1923. Tragically, Stephen (Steve) was crushed to death by a piece of slate in the Banner Mine in Byesville, Ohio on August 24, 1924. My mother had just turned 1 and he had just turned 25. It's possible they celebrated their birthdays together on the 5th or the 6th of August 1924 and then, within 3 weeks, he was gone. My grandmother was devastated and had 2 small children, my mother and my Uncle (George) Albert. She received compensation from the company for his accidental death and moved to Cleveland with the money.
- My great-grandmother, Helen (she may have been an orphan? Maiden name "Thila"?) was known as Grandma Troyan. She was born in Slovakia in 1878. She didn't have my grandfather until 1899. She was 21 at the time. Between 1899 and 1917, she had 8 healthy children (all living to adulthood). My great-uncle, Matt, was born in 1917 and was the youngest in the family. She spoke little to no English. But I have many photos of her smiling with her children and grandchildren. I believe she had a happy temperament. She died April 29, 1962 aged 84. I am aware she must've held me, perhaps at my baptism, but I have no memory of her. Her gravestone is barely visible with all the plants growing around it. I want to cut them back but I think we have to contact the cemetery before we do this?
- My great-grandfather, George Troyan, was the same age as my great-grandmother. His headstone shows his birthyear as 1878. However, he died in 1922 aged 44. Gary Troyan, Matt's son, says that George Troyan died of emphysema contracted in the coal mines. Probably the Banner Mine as well. With George passing in 1922 and his oldest son passing in 1924, the families must've been heartbroken. Of her youngest sons, Joe was 10, Pete was probably 8 and Matt was 5. In 1922, Grandma Troyan was not compensated for her husband's death because it was an illness and not an accident. Both families moved to Cleveland in hopes of better jobs and living.
