A Tale Told by Three Gravestones

Image
The summer of 2024, my husband and I drove down to Pleasant City, Ohio. It was the first time I had been down there since I was a kid. We drove to through the center of town. There had been businesses at one time but that summer there was no restaurant or even a place to buy a Coke. We found the church and then on our way out of town, we found the cemetery. It took some searching but with John's help, I found the gravestones I was looking for. My grandfather (Stephen Troyan) and his parents, Helen and George Troyan (my great-grandparents). The three headstones gave me lots of information: My grandfather was born August 6, 1899. He and my mother, Alice, nearly shared a birthday. My mother was born on August 5, 1923.  Tragically, Stephen (Steve) was crushed to death by a piece of slate in the Banner Mine in Byesville, Ohio on August 24, 1924. My mother had just turned 1 and he had just turned 25. It's possible they celebrated their birthdays together on the 5th or the 6th of Augu...

When I found this photo at my mother's house I became excited. I became aware I was looking at my great-grandparents and catching a glimpse of my grandfather as a teenager. Gary Troyan confirmed that the baby on the lap of my great-grandmother, Helen, is my great-uncle Pete.  Top Row Left to Right: My Grandfather, Stephen Troyan born August 6, 1899 - crushed to death by a piece of slate in a mining accident at the Banner Mine in Byesville, Ohio on August 24, 1924. INTRODUCTION - GOALS

Image
My name is Karen Eterovich and my goal with this blog will be to organize and bring together family history going back to all 4 sets of my Great Grandparents. Stories and photos will come from my mother, father, grandmother, aunts, uncles, all my cousins and so on. When I was in 10th Grade, one large assignment we had in Mr. Ginter's World History class was to write our family history. At that time I was able to interview my grandmother on my Mom's side, my father and my Mother. I will transcribe that history into these pages. However, as you might imagine, at that time, since I was 16, these sources did not tell me everything. I feel fortunate because there is a set of my mother's first cousins that will be able to help with stories about the Slifkos and the Troyans. Unfortunately, my first cousins on my father's side may now all be deceased.  Still, I am excited to start organizing this because I have a large photo collection. I have a suitcase full from my Great Aunt...
